Preventive Dentistry

Prevention is Key

We believe oral health care is a top priority

We believe oral health care is a priority priority. If left untreated, tooth decay can lead to serious health problems, including tooth loss, infection, irreversible bone loss, nerve damage and overall health effects that go far beyond your oral health. In fact, studies show that poor oral health may lead to heart disease in adults, miscarriages in expectant mothers, and even poorer school performance in children.

At our dental practice, we stress preventive dentistry to keep your smile bright and your overall health in top shape.

The Power of Prevention

There is one very effective way you can avoid spending a lot of time in the dental chair: Making sure you see the dentist at least twice a year. Our expert diagnostic exams, including careful evaluation of digital X-rays and professional cleaning with special instruments, can help our dentists spot small areas of concern. When we catch contained areas of decay, we are able to apply conservative dental treatments (such as dental fillings or bonding) to protect against deep cavities and damaging decay. You should also make sure you work hard with brushing and flossing at home and call the dentist if you experience pain, soreness, a loose tooth, or other dental problems.

Dr. Modrell also performs oral cancer screenings during each checkup to ensure your mouth is free of abnormal growths or precancerous lesions.

We believe strongly in the following four cornerstones of preventive dentistry:

Vigilant homecare: Brushing and flossing twice daily will help prevent tooth decay and slow the progression of gum disease.

Cleanings and exams: As meticulous as we might be with our home dental care, brushing and flossing are simply not enough to remover the hard plaque that naturally accumulates on your teeth. If left to grow, plaque will harbor bacteria that damage your teeth, cause your gum to recede, and leads to bone loss.  Therefore, it is important to visit your hygienist at least twice a year for cleanings and exams. Our skilled hygienists will remove the plaque that naturally builds up despite your best efforts at home and a dental exam can help catch dental problems early on when treatments are easier and less expensive.

Education: Whenever you come into our office, we are sure to explain what you can do to maintain optimal dental health. We stay on top of the latest research and share that information with you so you will know how best to take care of your teeth. We are here to help you understand how your lifestyle and behavior affect the health of your teet and gums. Preventive dentistry is our priority so we use a variety of resources and visual aids to explain the processes that lead to inevitable tooth decay and gum disease and provide you the tools you need to keep you teeth and gums healthy.

Commitment to good dental health: Taking care of yourself requires a commitment of time and money, and committing to your dental health will mean improved overall health in addition to keeping a beautiful, natural smile that lasts a lifetime.
